Deep CORE: Restoring Corals in the Mediterranean
Located on the coast of Spain's Granada province, the Punta de la Mona area is home to exceptional marine biodiversity. Despite its protected status, this environment remains vulnerable to human activities, particularly abandoned fishing nets that damage the seabed and coral colonies.
To address these challenges, the Deep CORE (Deep Coral Restoration) project develops community-led marine conservation initiatives. Local teams collect damaged coral fragments and, when necessary, place them in underwater nurseries to support their recovery before transplanting them onto the seabed once they are ready.
The project focuses in particular on the Mediterranean golden coral, a threatened species about which scientific knowledge remains limited.
But restoring corals alone is not enough. Deep CORE also carries out seabed clean-up operations and raises awareness among local communities and visitors. The goal is to help ecosystems regenerate while fostering a shared commitment to their protection.
Because every coral matters, every action helps preserve a precious marine balance.
