Lagoon: Environmentally Responsible Catamarans for Low-Impact Cruising

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of Lagoon catamarans to a minimum. Learn how in this article.

December 11, 2025

Our crew has always accorded particular attention to the preservation of our seas and oceans.  From their initial design and throughout the lifecycle of our boats, including the phases of construction, cruising, and second lives…

As the oceans are increasingly enduring the effects of climate change and pollution, the cruising world is evolving.  Comfort and performance are no longer the only criteria:  more and more owners are seeking concrete solutions for enjoying the sea without harming it.

In this context, Lagoon has become a reference:  as a builder, we never cease to evolve to reduce the ecological footprint of our boats.  We do this while preserving the freedom, pleasure, and escape from the everyday – or that which is the very essence of travel by sea, according to Lagoon.

A Reduced Environmental Impact During the Entire Lifecycle of the Boat

To preserve marine ecosystems and design environmentally friendly catamarans, our teams have analyzed and rethought the entire life cycle of each boat.

With Lagoon, catamaran emissions are reduced at every phase:

-  At the design phase, with the choice of innovative, sustainable materials;
- During construction, at the quality-certified production sites, with environmental management and energy performance;
- While the catamarans are in use, with optimized energy consumption and a water treatment system;
- During their second life phase, with Lagoon refit;
- Then, at the end of their cruising lifecycle, with deconstruction.

Lagoon and Responsible Naval Construction

Within our group, respecting the environment is an ambition that begins as soon as the concept phase.  Bio-sourced or recycled resins, certified woods… in the Lagoon offices, materials are chosen to limit the carbon footprint and the environmental impact of our catamarans.  Due to this, and to other commitments by our group – concrete investments, decarbonation of our sites, a structured CSR policy, etc. – we affirm our positioning as environmentally responsible catamaran builders.

Certified Production Sites and Optimized Construction Procedures

Lagoon catamarans are constructed in France, at ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 50001certified production sites.  These certifications attest to the rigor of processes put into place to reconcile exacting industrial standards with respect for the environment.  Added to this are the generalization of LED lighting at the production sites, energy optimization of the buildings, installation of solar panels over parking lots, etc.:  in just one year, these efforts have enabled a reduction of 24% in carbon intensity related to energy consumption of our production sites.

Analyzing the Lifecycle of Each Element of the Catamaran

Since 2021, Lagoon has integrated Lifecycle Analysis in the design if its catamarans.  In this analysis, we measure the precise impact of each component, from the extraction of primary materials to the end of the catamaran’s lifespan.  This method guides our technical decisions toward more sustainable solutions, with a vision for the long term.

Innovative, Sustainable Materials to Limit Environmental Impact

Bio-Sourced Resins in Catamaran Construction

We have been among the first shipyards to integrate, in the construction of our catamarans, a bio-sourced resin with a small carbon footprint.  Developed by Polynt Group, this is used today aboard multiple models, including the Lagoon 51 Iconic, Lagoon 55, Lagoon 60, Lagoon SIXTY 5 and Lagoon EIGHTY 2.

This is an ISCC Plus-certified material that is produced in Europe, high-performance, traceable, and with a lower carbon footprint than all conventional resins – including epoxy resins.

Natural and Recycled Fibers for Greener Catamarans

In moving toward more circular cruising, we have also decided on the integration of recycled fiberglass in the construction of our catamarans.

To limit the use of petrochemical-based materials, Lagoon is also exploring the use of natural fibers – such as hemp and basalt.  These are already used in 25% of the non-structural parts of our catamarans.

Certified Woods and Environmentally Responsible Purchasing

On board Lagoon catamarans, more than half of the wood comes from the European Union, and 71% is sourced from sustainably managed forests. By 2030, the goal is to reach 80% across our entire fleet. To ensure a more responsible supply chain, our buyers are trained in environmental issues.

Cruise Without Harming the Environment:  Equipment Designed for Responsible Cruising

When we talk about environmental impact in the marine industry, we often first think of construction materials or engines.  But, over the entire lifespan of a boat, the phase of use represents a large part of the CO₂ emissions.  Also, it is important to us that owners can use their Lagoon catamaran, regularly, without harming the environment.

Privileging Sailing

Aboard all our sailing catamarans, we actively work to facilitate wind-powered cruising:  we limit the need for combustion engine use by developing the performance of our catamarans under sail.

Solar Panels and Energy Economy on Board

On board, energy efficiency is also essential.  On our catamarans, solar panels enable you to cover a large percentage of the energy needs related to onboard comforts.  As such, the use of generators or engines while at anchor is reduced.

The air conditioning systems selected consume less energy while ensuring a comfortable temperature on board, even in tropical regions.

Concerning water management, the integration of onboard water purification systems considerably limits the use of plastic bottles.

Autonomy on Board: Lagoon’s Solutions for Long Cruises

Kits and Guides for Environmentally Responsible Cruising

Since 2020, all Lagoon catamarans are delivered with an environmentally responsible maintenance kit.  This includes documentation on best practices to adopt while cruising or at anchor, some recommendations for more a sustainable life on board, and even some biodegradable products.

Water management, recycling, the choice of moorings, anchor use… we discuss all the steps in preserving the sea and its varied species.  We give you the keys to more environmentally responsible cruising, without ever giving up the comfort and enjoyment of your cruise!

Lagoon NEO, Extending the Catamaran Lifespan

The Lagoon NEO Refit Program

In keeping with the concept of circular cruising, the Lagoon NEO refit program aims to extend the lifespan of catamarans already in circulation.  These catamarans are updated with the latest technical and environmental innovations – with an optimized naval architecture for comfort and performance, more sustainable materials, and more efficient equipment in terms of energy use.

Catamarans at the End of the Lifecycle

Concerning the end of the lifecycle of a Lagoon sailing or power catamaran, our shipyard is an active member of APER:  an environmental organization responsible for recycling cruising boats at the end of their lifecycle.

Our crew also actively supports several initiatives for environmental protection and preserving marine biodiversity.  Among them, Coral Guardian – which as restored more than 1,600 corals in threatened zones – and Alliance Posidonia, committed to the protection of seagrass.

From the Lagoon EIGHTY 2 On:  A New Generation of Environmentally Responsible Catamarans

Lagoon EIGHTY 2:  A Sustainable Catamaran Showcasing Change

Among all Lagoon catamaran models, the luxurious Lagoon EIGHTY 2 is the biggest catamaran ever built by our brand.  And this is not by accident:  it is a strong symbol of our transition toward environmentally responsible naval construction.

The catamaran integrates:

• 45% bio-sourced resin
• 80% recycled fiberglass
• Equipment enabling you to cruise in "silent mode" – using uniquely solar or stored energy.

In total, for each boat built, nearly 10 metric tons of CO₂ are saved!

Concrete Commitments Across the Lagoon Range

In time, the innovations adopted aboard the Lagoon EIGHTY 2 will be integrated aboard all our boats:  from the comfortable Lagoon 38 to the majestic Lagoon EIGHTY 2, all the catamarans of our fleet will be constructed with the same exacting standards, for the protection of our seas and oceans.

Without compromising reliability or cruising pleasure, each owner can contribute to limiting the impact of cruising on the environment.
